The first hour saw 11 eliminations, then after the remaining 108 players had been fed and watered, some serious aggressive poker was played throughout.

An unusual final table of 11 was set once our 12th place finisher was eliminated. Lee Smith who qualified through our Red Tavern online league held the chip lead with 125,000 in chips. Unfortunately Lee couldn’t take home the win as he was eliminated in 8th place and also just fell short of a National Final seat.

The heads-up match came down to Aden Reeve from the Ash Hotel in Stockport and Mark Christie from the Red Lion in Bolton. The final hand saw the best hand hold up as Mark’s K3 smashed a board of TK4 4 K to complete a full house and defeat Aden’s 89. Mark takes home £500, a crystal glass trophy and a seat in next years National Final.

122 players entered Liverpool’s Gala Casino with the hope of leaving with one of six National Final seats and a share of £1000.

Cards were in the air at 2pm prompt with Mark Holland from the Bears Paw in North Warrington being the first to be eliminated.

As Gary Leman from the Old Custom House exited the tournament in 9th place, we were down to our final table of eight. All eight players would receive a cash prize and as Dave Campbell had already got a National Final seat under his belt, qualifying would move down a spot to 7th.

Steven Lamb started the final table as chip leader and he made no mistake as he secured the North West Two title and collected the £500 cash. Steven, from the Charnley Arms in Wigan, defeated Nick Ince from the Seven Woods in the heads-up match. Nick can have no complaints as Steven got his chips in with A4, slighty ahead of Nick’s K2. The board ran out J7A 3 4 to give Steven two pairs. Although, Nick still has the comfort of a £200 cash prize and a National Final seat. Congratulations to all winners!

Star City Circus Casino have just advised us that full access to the casino will not be available until 1:30pm on Sunday 5th September, due to major electrical maintenance. The Gala Casino in Glasgow was the venue for our second Regional Final of the weekend. A healthy 90% turnout made this one of our biggest ever South Scotland Regional Finals, with all eight finalists receiving a share of £1000.

Play got under-way in good time as Mark Kane from the No.2 Baker Street in Stirling was our first elimination of the day. This gave Mark plenty of cheer leading practice as his other two compatriots fought their way through to the final table.

As soon as Sarah Campbell from the Barrachnie Inn in Glasgow was eliminated in 9th place, the final table was upon us. Andrew Allen from the Fountain in Aberfeldy held the chip lead with 45,000 in chips and he was to go on and contest the heads-up match for the title against Gavin Earle from the No.2 Baker Street in Stirling.

The decisive hand saw Andrew get his chips in the middle in bad shape, as his flopped gutshot with 54 was up against Gavin’s top pair on a 896 flop. The turn and the river brought a Q and 4 respectively which meant Gavin’s 94 was good enough to make him our new South Scotland regional champion. Gavin received £500, a large glass trophy and an invite to our upcoming National Final.

The Gala Casino in Dundee kicked off our latest round of Regional Finals for season 2. £1000 would once again be split amongst the top eight places with National Final seats going to the top 3 players.

Play started at around 2pm and it wasn’t long before our first player of the weekend was eliminated. Paul MacKenzie from the Granary in Elgin takes home the honour, although it was a different story for his two Granary compatriots as Andy Duncan and Adis Delic both fell just short of the final table and a cash prize.

As the final table was upon us, Wayne McCallum held the chip lead with 86,000 in chips. A comfortable 40,000 ahead of his closest rival. It soon emerged that Gary Pratt from the Butchers Arms in Aberdeen had already qualified for the National Final so that opened up a seat for 4th place in the days tournament. As Gary stormed to the heads-up match with Wayne, Julie Bone would get that extra seat as the 4th place finisher.

The final hand of the tournament very much played itself as Wayne’s AT had Gary’s A9 is bad shape. Gary must of thought it was his day as the flop brought a 9, but the poker gods had other ideas as a T hit the river with a final board of 39K J T to give Wayne the win and £500 in cash.

Simon Trumper, tournament director for the day, announced ’shuffle up and deal’ at 2pm after a short presentation of certificates and trophies to the 58 individual club winners by John Holmes, Rileys Operations Director and Martin Green, Redtooth Director.

Several hours and blind levels later we were down to the final 18 who were all happy to be taking away a share of the £10,000 prize pool and shortly after the final table was announced as:

With a clear chip leader in Michael Hamnett and quite a few short stacked players it wouldn’t take long for the tournament to come to a conclusion. After some fierce battles, the chip leader was eliminated in 4th place swiftly followed by his closest chip rival at the start of the final table, Yanuk Wosik. This left the heads up battle to commence between Dirk Wilson, Reading and Micheal Turnbull, Plymouth.

Well done to Dirk Wilson of Reading taking home £4000 and the winners trophy.
