Players gathered at our new Regional Final venue, Manchester235 Casino in the wake of England’s slightly disappointing World Cup result against the USA. There was no doubting that the players were all football fans with several nursing sore heads from the previous night.
Despite all the football talk it was soon time for the big kick off, the poker tournament started just after 2pm and it took almost 20 minutes for the deadlock to be broken, when Anthony Reel of the Carousel in Stockport became the first to head for an early bath.
At half time everyone enjoyed a local favourite, a Lancashire Hot Pot, and then it was time for the second half.
The final table was dominated by Carol Davison from the Dog & Partridge in Morecambe and Gareth Nixon from the Guild in Preston who had more chips than the other 8 players combined. With such a large advantage there was no danger of it being a long drawn out defensive battle in the early stages. Just missing out on cash prizes in 10th and 9th place respectively were John Levey of the Griffin in Bowdon and Joe Bowerman of the Sherwood in Fulwood. They were quickly followed by Marc Seddon from the Parkside Hotel in Manchester in 8th place and Graeme Tyrrell from the Red Lion Hotel in Bolton in 7th place.

Our North East Regional Final would consist of 155 players. These players would be playing for a share of £1000 and six National Final places.
Two players from the final table would leave slightly disappointed at missing out on a place in next years National Final, but they would receive a small cash prize for their efforts. John Wardle and Paul McFarlane would be the unlucky two players on this occasion but time is still on their side.
A heads-up match between Chris Peers from the Eagle in Stockton-on-Tees and Steve Embleton from DL5 in Newton Aycliffe would commence after Brent Allen’s elimination in 3rd place. The final hand saw Chris receive the luck he needed as his 9h6s outdrew Steve’s Ad5h on a Kc7h6h 6d 4c board. Chris receives £500, a Redtooth trophy and a seat in next years National Final.

Sheffield United’s Bramell Lane played host once again to our South Yorkshire Regional Final. 188 players played for eight National Final seats and a share of £1000.
The UK’s Pub Poker Champion, Daniel Blackburn had a Regional Final to forget as he hit the rail in 177th. Fortunately for Daniel he still has plenty of time to reach the National Final again as this was just the start of his quest to defend the title he deservedly won in March.
A final table of eight would mean everybody who made it this far would win a National Final seat. But there would still be a matter of a £500 first prize to play for and not forgetting a very nice Redtooth crystal glass trophy. Six eliminations later we were left with Jack Siddons from Rossington Labour Club in Doncaster and Ian Wood from the Three Horseshoes in Wickersley. The tournament would be decided with a classic race, Ian’s Qs9c would be up against Jack’s 4c4h. Ian got a good JhJc8d flop meaning an 8 would also give Ian the victory. But it was the more unlikely runner runner straight that gave Ian the win with a Kd turn and Ts river. Ian takes home £500 in cash, a Redtooth trophy and a National Final seat.
National Final Qualifiers & Cash Prize Winners
1st Ian Wood – Three Horseshoes, Wickersley
2nd Jack Siddons – Rossington Labour Club, Doncaster
3rd Camilla Robson – King & Miller, Retford
4th Trevor Lowe – Three Horse Shoes, Chesterfield
5th Andy Wademan – Hammer & Pincers, Sheffield
6th Chris Dixon – Miners Arms, Sheffield
7th Jim Baker – Donkey Derby, Chesterfield
8th Rickie Silcock – Three Horse Shoes, Chesterfield

123 players entered the Loose Cannon Club in London with the hope of reaching next years National Final and taking home the £500 1st prize and a Redtooth crystal glass trophy.
Only the top six would make the National Final, which left two of the final table leaving empty handed and another two players with a cash prize of £20 and £30 which should soften the blow slightly. Surprisingly, our the chip leader Peter Jones from the George in Slough just fell short of a National Final place as he hit the rail in 8th place winning £20 in cash. That left the final seven players all playing for six National Final seats. Raj Dattani, who was a short stack the whole time was the unlucky player to miss out as he finished in 7th place for £30, but Raj still has plenty more chances to qualify.
Kieron Steer from the Goat In Boots in Chelsea and Jimmy Carolin from the Fest Pub in Fulham would play for the top prize and trophy. Kieron would go on to be crowned the new West London champion as his pocket 3’s won the race against Jimmy’s 8c6c on a Qs7sQh 2d As board. Well done to all National Final qualifiers.

The well organized Circus Casino, Star City in Birmingham hosted our second West Midlands Regional Final for season 1. 162 players meant the top 8 would all receive a cash prize and a National Final seat.
Play got under way on time at 2pm with a very tight and nervy first hour. Only a handful of players would be eliminated during this time which meant the inevitable rush of knock-outs after the first break.
At around 7pm we had our final table of 10 were unfortunately two of the players would still leave with nothing. It took literally a few hands until we had our final eight players and qualifiers for the next years National Final. Amongst the final eight was Janet Page from the Golden Hind in Kingstanding, this would be Janet’s third Regional Final final table in a row and once again making the National Final. This time around Janet would exit the Regional Final in third place, which left the heads-up match between Sean Julien from the Bull & Anchor in Coventry and Patrick Buchanan from the Beggars Bush in Birmingham, with Sean holding the chip lead. One hand later it was all over as Sean flopped top pair but was unbelievably still an underdog to Patrick’s huge draw, an open ended straight draw and a flush draw. Somehow Patrick missed everything as Sean’s Qc8s held up on a 2dQdJs Ac 4h board against Patrick’s Td9d. Well done Julien.
National Final Qualifiers & Cash Prize Winners
1st Sean Julien – Bull & Anchor, Coventry
2nd Patrick Buchanan – Beggars Bush, Birmingham
3rd Janet Page – Golden Hind, Kingstanding
4th Craig Brown – Yard Of Ale, Birmingham
5th Dave Symons – Alfred, Burton-on-Trent
6th Todd Keyte – Hilton Brook, Hilton
7th Paul Gray – Bowling Green, Lichfield
8th Stephen Mear – Wyggeston, Burton-on-Trent
